Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until September 8, 2010 when Portnoy left the band. The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Guitarist John Petrucci has been named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any invited players. In 2009 he was named the No. 2 best metal guitarist by Joel McIver in his book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists. He was also named as one of the "Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time" by GuitarOne magazine.[2] Former drummer Mike Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer Magazine and is also the second youngest person (at the age of 37) to be inducted into the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame. John Myung was voted the greatest bassist of all time in a poll conducted by MusicRadar in August through September 2010. The band was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2010.[3] The band's highest selling album is the gold selling Images and Words (1992), which reached #61 on the Billboard 200 charts.[4] Both the 1994 release Awake and their 2002 release Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence also entered the charts at #32 and #46 respectively and received mostly positive reviews. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence also led to Dream Theater becoming the initial band reviewed in the Music Section of Entertainment Weekly during its opening week of release, despite the magazine generally preferring more mainstream music. In 2007, Systematic Chaos entered US Billboard 200 at #19.[4] Dream Theater has sold over 2.1 million albums in the U.S.,[5] and over 10 million records worldwide.[6] The band's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, was released on June 23, 2009. It entered the US Billboard 200 at #6 and Eurochart Hot 100 at #1, marking their highest entry on either chart.

Dream Theater was formed in Massachusetts in 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy decided to form a band in their spare time while studying at the Berklee College of Music. The trio started by covering Rush and Iron Maiden songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.

Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy joined together on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the The Score So Far... documentary, they were waiting in line for tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the band on a boom box. Portnoy commented that the ending of the song "Bastille Day" (from the album Caress of Steel) sounded "majestic". It was then decided that Majesty would be the band's name.^[7]

The trio then set out to fill the remaining positions in the group. Petrucci asked his high school band-mate Kevin Moore to play the keyboard. After he accepted the position, another friend from home, Chris Collins, was recruited as lead vocalist after band members heard him sing a cover of "Queen of the Reich" by Queensrÿche.^[8] During this time, Portnoy, Petrucci, and Myung's hectic schedules forced them to abandon their studies to concentrate on their music, as they did not feel they could learn more in college. Moore also left his college, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the band.

The beginning months of 1986 were filled with various concert dates in and around the New York City area. During this time, the band recorded a collection of demos, titled The Majesty Demos. The initial run of 1,000 sold out within six months, and dubbed copies of the cassette became popular within the progressive metal scene. The Majesty Demos are still available in their original tape format today, despite being released officially on CD, through Mike Portnoy's YtseJam Records.

In November 1986, after a few months of writing and performing together, Chris Collins was fired. After a year of trying to find a replacement, Charlie Dominici, who was far older and more experienced than anyone else in the band, successfully auditioned for the group. With the stability that Dominici's appointment brought to Majesty, they began to increase the number of shows played in the New York City area, gaining a considerable amount of exposure.

Shortly after hiring Dominici, a Las Vegas group also named Majesty^[9] threatened legal action for intellectual property infringement related to the use of their name, so the band was forced to adopt a new moniker. Various possibilities were proposed and tested, among them Glasser, Magus, and M1, which were all rejected, though the band did go as Glasser for about a week, though fans reacted poorly to this decision. It wasn't^[10] until Portnoy's father suggested the name Dream Theater, the name of a movie house in Monterey, California.

70'an

Heavy Metal awal 70'an digawangi oleh band-band seperti Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, dan Deep Purple, Heavy Metal pada era tersebut masih dipengaruhi oleh elemen Blues yang kental. Judas Priest mengembangkan genre ini dengan menghilangkan unsur blues dan lebih mengandalkan distorsi, beat yang lebih cepat, dan harmoni. Pada akhir 70'an munculah New Wave oF British Heavy Metal yang dipelopori Motorhead, NWOBHM menggabungkan Punk dan Heavy Metal. Band-band NWOBHM lainya adalah Iron Maiden, Saxon, Venom, Diamond Head, dll.

Awal 80'an

Awal era 80'an Di gawangi oleh band-band NWOBAM seperti Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Venom dan Diamond Head. Heavy Metal akhirnya bertabrakan dengen musik Pop hal ini memunculkan genre yang disebut Glam Metal, Glam Metal berhasil menerobos chart-chart papan atas, hal ini menyebabkan Heavy Metal lebih tersebar cepat di seluruh dunia

Tempo lagu sangat cepat yang diusung oleh gitaris yang memainkan gitar rhytm Downstrokepada Thrash metal oleh band-band sepertiMetallica, Megadeth, Slayer dan Anthrax yang dijuluki Big Four Of Thrash. Di San Francisco adaTestament dan Exodus di New Jersey adaOverkill dan Sepultura dari Brazil. Sedangkan Speed metal dimainkan lebih cepat sangat-sangat cepat dan bertenaga seperti Motörhead (akhir-akhir), Iron Angel, Anthrax. Sedangkan musik Thrash metal yang berasal dari Eropa adalah seperti, Kreator dan Destruction, keduanya dari negara Jerman.

Death metal

Pada tahun 1990'an, underground ini lebih memasuki ke Extreme metal seperti Grindcore dipelopori oleh Napalm Death dan Brutal Truth, berkembang pada 1991 menjadi Death metal Scandinavia oleh Entombed, Dismember,Unleashed, dan At The Gates. Melodic Death metal yang berasal dari Gothenburg Swedia lalu berkembang diFinlandia dan Norwegia oleh band-band seperti Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Disessction. Kemudian ada istilah yang digunakan yaitu, Techical metal di pioniri oleh Cynic, Atheist, Meshuggah, Death. Progressive Death metalyang mungkin lebih cenderung ke visualisasi dan banyak menggunakan Tradisional pun dimaklumi, Pionirnya adalah Opeth, Pestilence, Death, Novembre dan mungkin Progressive metal oleh Dream Theater, Queensryche, dan Fates Warning.

Black metal

Aliran ini muncul sekitar awal dan pertengahan tahun 1980-an, yang diprakarsai oleh band-band cadas sepertiVenom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, dan Bathory. Pada akhir 80-an band Mayhem dan Burzum mengarah kedalam black metal gelombang kedua.

Power metal

Power Metal adalah genre ini lebih bersemangat dan vokalis genre ini kebanyakan di pengaruhi oleh Rob Halford dan Bruce Dickinson band-band genre ini kebanyakan dari Eropa. Misalnya, Europe (Swedia), Iron Maiden (U.K), Helloween (Jerman).

Doom Metal dan Gothic metal

Doom Metal adalah aliran yang lebih mengutamakan penekanan lirik, dengan tempo yang dibawah rata-rata subgenre Extreme Metal lainya aliran ini terinspirasi oleh Black Sabbath era pertama, band yang termasuk aliran ini contohnya adalah Saint Vitus, Obsessed dan Candlemass. Gothic Metal adalah evolusi Doom Metal, awal genre ini adalah munculnya band-band Death/Doom dari inggris yaitu My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema, band Gothic Metal sekarang banyak mengandalkan harmoni antara vocal pria dan wanita (kadang-kadang dengan growl).

Musik Klasik dimulai dengan penemuan Notasi Gregorian tehun 590 oleh Paus Agung
Gregori, berupa balok not dengan 4 garis, namun notasi belum ada hitungannya. Paus
Gregory semasa hidupnya telah mencatat lagu-lagu Gereja dengan Notasi Gregorian
tersebut. sebelum tahun 590 musik mengalami kegelapan tidak ada peninggalan tertulis
yang dapat dibaca.

Notasi musik lahir pada tahun 590 yang disebut Notasi Gregorian, yang ditemukan oleh
Paus Agung Gregori, di mana sebelumnya musik mengalami kegelapan tidak ada
peninggalan tertulis. Pada masa hidupnya Paus Gregori telah menyalin ratusan lagu-lagu
Gereja dalam Notasi Gregorian tersebut. Notasi ini memekai 4 garis sebagai balok not,
tetapi belum ada notasi iramanya (hitungan berdasarkan perasaan penyanyi. Di sini sifat
lagu masih sebagai lagu tunggal atau monofoni.

Musik Organum 1150-1400

Pada awalnya orang menyanyi dengan nada yang sama, atau disebut dengan organum,
nada atas dinyanyikan oleh wanita atau anak-anak, sedangkan nada rendah dinyanyikan
oleh laki-laki. Di sini terjadi susunan lagu berjarak oktaf, suara tinggi (wanita/anak-anak)
dan suara rendah (laki-laki).
